The central idea behind the development of Sector Mono was to optimize a font specifically for subtitles used in the project. Over time, drawing inspiration from teletext, we gradually transitioned towards a modular version that functions exceptionally well as a variable font.

The alphabet is available under the OFL licensing, therefore making it open-source.

Sector Mono is a bespoke typeface commissioned by Mexican artist Juan Arturo García. The typeface was created as part of an installation called Taxonomic Ambiguity, which explores the socio-political mechanisms of language related to ecological issues, with a specific focus on southern Mexico.
